Structural Motions and Vibration Mitigation

This presentation provides an opportunity to discuss structural motions and vibration mitigation strategies for pedestrian & vehicle bridges, sky-walks, link bridges, long span floors, sports and entertainment grandstands, as well as slender structures.

Topics include: sources of vibration and advanced modeling techniques; vibration criteria for a range of structures; types of supplemental damping systems; project examples and how performance-based damping can be used by designers to incorporate damping into structures to enhance overall performance and efficiency.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the steps used to identify and analyze the sources of structural vibration in pedestrian and vehicle bridges, sky-walks, link bridges, long-span floors, and slender structures.
  • Understand how vibration criteria is evaluated and advanced modeling techniques are utilized to predict and assess structural performance under dynamic loads.
  • Design and justify the integration of performance-based damping strategies by selecting appropriate supplemental damping systems to improve structural efficiency and user comfort.
