Description

The Evolution of Tall Buildings: Racing Towards Mile-High Towers and Beyond -Dr. Mir Ali The presentation covers the architectural style and aesthetics of tall buildings in successive eras since the inception of this building type. Following this, the technological developments will be discussed. Incremental advances in the technology of structural materials like masonry, steel, concrete, and composite material will be discussed. A brief history of tall building structures will then be presented. Finally, innovations in structural systems that signaled the renaissance of tall building design allowing tall buildings to reach progressively greater heights will be reviewed. The presentation concludes that the mile-high dream can someday be a reality. Supporting the Tallest Buildings Around the World: Tall Building Foundation Solutions -Darren Deihm Tall buildings pose very extreme challenges. Foundation design is just as critical as the superstructure and often requires multiple unique solutions across a single building site with the goal of consistent support. Recent trends in the building industry and changes in construction materials have resulted in taller, heavier buildings which place ever increasing demands on foundation capacity. The geotechnical design of foundations has evolved considerably in the last 25 years based on the knowledge and experience of the engineering and construction industries. GEI's Darren Diehm will discuss the basis of foundations and the current practice of conventional design. Case histories within the presentation will highlight the selection process for foundations and the analysis needed for design, demonstrating the art of foundation support when given demanding environments.
