Tips for Optimizing Structural Masonry Design: A Series of Lessons Learned & Case Studies for Effective & Efficient Design & Construction

Seemingly simple decisions during design can dramatically impact cost, schedule, constructability and performance on a project. By understanding the various options available in materials, design and construction methods, more effective and cost / time efficient structures will result. This seminar will use a “Tips” format that will highlight common myths and misconceptions that will aid in a proper understanding of masonry, resulting in better buildings. Subject matter related to industry changes such as codes, standards, practices, technologies, etc. will be studied through case studies and lessons learned to demonstrate how to leverage the capacity of structural masonry, eliminate practices that reduce capacity, and how masonry can be integrated with other structural systems that can complement each other and provide an overall project benefit.

Learning Objectives

  • Discover updated design criteria & how local strength of masonry affects several areas of masonry design.
  • Learn the construction cost impacts of design choices and how to detail structural masonry effectively.
  • Acquire design insights on high-performing lintels, pre-fabrication and non-loading masonry design.
  • Understand methods for movement control strategies that can have project benefits.
