Structural Design Challenges of an Urban Interchange
Located in the center of downtown Chicago, the Jane Byrne Interchange consists of the removal and replacement of twenty bridge structures, rehabilitation to three existing structures, and the construction of approximately fifty retaining walls as part of the overall improvement of the I-90/94 and I-290/Congress Parkway interchange.
Due to its constrained location, ideal design parameters were not always possible. This presentation will discuss the many challenges present while designing the proposed bridges and retaining walls in this urban setting including: vertical and horizontal constraints, extremely poor soil conditions, underground ductbanks, main drain storm sewer, abandoned and active tunnels and other utilities, and conflicts with existing bridge substructure elements and the existing CTA Blue Line tunnels, among others. This presentation will also discuss some of the proposed solutions used to overcome these challenging conditions including the use of shallow depth steel plate girders, the constraints of galvanizing and metalizing of steel beams, and design considerations for adjacentdrilled shaft retaining walls.
Attendees will earn 1.0 hour of Continuing Education Credit. CE certificates will be emailed after the event.
