Our Awards and Events                   For More Information
Young Engineer Award
The Young Engineer Award is presented to a structural engineer, 35 years old or younger, in recognition of their outstanding achievements in structural engineering. The candidate must exhibit both technical and interpersonal qualities that all young engineers should strive to achieve. He/she must have gone above and beyond the typical expectations placed on a young engineer. To nominate someone for this award, please download and fill out the application.
SE Exam Pizza Social
A Q&A session with a member of the Illinois Structural Engineering Board. Non-technical aspects of the Structural Engineering Exam are discussed over pizza, pop, and beer. This event is best attended by those taking the exam in 6 months or longer based on the topic of content.
Happy Hours
We recently began holding happy hours throughout the year including joint events with the Young Architects group of AIA. The event is held at a central downtown Chicago location after work. All members are welcome to attend.
Sporting Events
Sporting events sponsored by YEC are typically for all members of SEAOI and their friends and family. We get group tickets for the game and give them to you for a reduced price. Chicago Cubs and White Sox have traditionally been our sport outings, but we are currently looking to expand that with Chicago Bulls games as well.
Illinois State Science Fair Judging
Every Spring, a couple members of the Young Engineers Committee, on behalf of SEAOI, travel to the University of IL to judge structural engineering related projects at the Illinois State Science Fair. SEAOI presents (4) "Special Awards" to students that show a solid understanding of the basics of structural engineering in addition to a savings bond and invitation to an SEAOI event.
If you are interested in learning more about the committee, have suggestions/comments about events, or have a question related to young engineers, please contact the committee chair, Todd Alwood at Alwood@aisc.org.

Company Surveys
SEAOI is currently working to build a comprehensive company profile book that documents information on the structural engineering firms and related companies that are members of SEAOI. A survey was sent to all companies and will be compiled to list services performed, company size, and other pertinent information that could be useful in your job hunt.
