Instructor biographies:

Neal S. Anderson, S.E., P.E., is Vice President of Engineering at CRSI (Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute).  He received his BS and MS in Civil Engineering from Purdue University.  He is a licensed SE in two states and PE in four states.  Mr. Anderson joined CRSI in early 2008, with responsibilities for the technical engineering operations of the Institute. Mr. Anderson’s 21 years of experience with Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. included work on a variety of structural and materials evaluations, bridge superstructure and deck repair projects, and assignments including structural building frames, building facades, plazas, slabs-on-grade, historic steel construction, and parking decks. Mr. Anderson has served on the investigation team for several structural collapses. He has experience in the evaluation and repair of steel structures, with particular emphasis on riveted steel repair. He also has managed projects on the condition assessment and rehabilitation of historic concrete and steel bridges, and several major stadium structures. 

David A. Fanella, Ph.D., S.E., P.E., F.ASCE, is Associate Principal and Director of New Structures at Klein and Hoffman Inc., Chicago, IL. Dr. Fanella holds a Ph.D. in structural engineering from the University of Illinois at Chicago and is a licensed Structural Engineer in the State of Illinois and a licensed Professional Engineer in numerous states. He is past President of the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois. Dr. Fanella is an active member of a number of American Concrete Institute (ACI) Committees, is an Associate Member of the ASCE 7 Committee, and serves on the board of the Applied Technology Council. He has authored or co-authored many structural publications, including a series of articles on time-saving methods for reinforced concrete design.

Lawrence C. Novak, S.E., SECB, FACI, LEED® AP BD+C, is the Director of Engineered Buildings for the Portland Cement Association.  Prior to joining PCA, he was an Associate Partner with Skidmore, Owings & Merrill where he served as the lead structural engineer for the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, which received the SEAOI “Most Innovative Structure Award”.  Novak serves on several technical committees, including the ACI 318 Structural Concrete Code committee and the ACI 130 committee on Sustainability of Concrete.  He has served as Director on the governing board for organizations including SEAOI, TCA and the Illinois Engineering Hall of Fame.  He has co-authored numerous papers on engineering and is a co-recipient of SEAOI’s “Meritorious Publication Award”, the NCSEA’s “Outstanding Structural Engineering Publication Award” and the United Kingdom’s “Oscar Faber Award”.  In 2010, he was chosen as the “Centennial Lecturer” in engineering and he was named the “Citizen Engineer of the Year” by the Illinois Chapter of ASCE.  In 2011, he was selected as the ACI “Speaker of the Year”.  

John B. Turner, CSP, PE
John Turner is the Greater Southwestern Region Manager for the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute, having held that position since March 2009.  Prior to coming to CRSI, John was a structural engineer with Dallas-area firms L. A. Fuess Partners, Carter & Burgess, and most recently, Wiss Janney Elstner Associates.  His design experience includes both reinforced concrete and steel structures, including buildings in moderate seismic zones and hurricane prone regions. John holds a bachelor of science in safety engineering from Texas A&M University and a master’s of science in civil engineering from Texas Tech University.  He maintains designation as a Certified Safety Professional and is a licensed Professional Engineer (structural) in Texas. Prior to his current structural engineering career, John worked as a safety and fire protection engineer in a variety of industries, including petrochemical processing and electronics manufacturing.  His first job after receiving his BS from Texas A&M was with the technical services contractor for the Space Shuttle Main Engine Testing Program at Stennis Space Center, Mississippi. John has developed and presented adult education programs for about 20 years, including several years as an adjunct instructor for the Region 6 OSHA Training Institute run by the Texas Engineering Extension Service.
