STEEL PLATE SHEAR WALLS SEMINAR
 MARCH 17, 2010

featuring
Rafael Sabelli, S.E.

Steel plate shear walls are a relatively new seismic-load resisting system that is becoming more attractive as its seismic performance and economy become better understood. Steel plate shear walls have been used in applications ranging from high-rise construction to single-family residential construction. The system offers the opportunity to provide high strength and stiffness in a concentrated area of the building. Proper detailing of the system permits excellent seismic performance.

This seminar draws on the AISC Design Guide 20, by Rafael Sabelli, SE, and Michel Bruneau, Ph.D. It gathers the information available to date from analytical studies, physical tests, design applications, and design specifications, and presents a clear, logical, and coherent design methodology that is consistent with the observed behavior of the system and the goals of the design specifications. The range of analytical approaches possible for the system is presented, with discussion as to the appropriate applications for each compares their efficiency in terms of design effort and economy of the structure. A design example is presented, including analysis and sample designs of key elements.

Rafael Sabelli, S.E. is a Principal and Director of Seismic Design at Walter P Moore. He is the co-recipient of the 2008 AISC T.R. Higgins Lectureship, and is a member of the AISC Task Committee on the Seismic Provisions for Structural Steel Buildings, the ASCE 7 Seismic subcommittee, and a past member of the NCSEA Seismic Code Advisory Committee. He is the coauthor (with Michel Bruneau) of AISC Design Guide 20: Steel Plate Shear Walls, as well as of numerous research papers on conventional and buckling restrained braced frames. Rafael was the 2000 NEHRP Professional Fellow in Earthquake Hazard Reduction, and is the Past Chair of the Seismology Committee of the Structural Engineers Association of California. Rafael is currently the President of the Structural Engineers Association of California. The seminar will provide 7.5 hours of continuing education credit. If you have questions on the seminar, please contact Elizabeth O’Connor at 312-726-4165 x301 or Click here for the registration form.

SEAOI EVENTS                Click here for the full 2010 Calendar
SEAOI is now an AIA/CES approved provider of continuing education for architects.
Dinner Meetings
Dinner meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month at the Cliff Dwellers Club in Chicago. The event includes a cocktail hour, dinner, and presentation. Presentations are typically member firms' projects related to structural engineering. Two months out of the year, our dinner meetings are replaced with the Structural Engineers Foundation Lecture. Dinner meetings are not held during the summer months of June, July, and August. See above for information on the next dinner meeting.
Seminars/Workshops
SEAOI hosts many seminars and workshops throughout the year to aid in meeting your continuing education requirements. These events typically vary from 4 to 8 hours and are held throughout the Chicagoland area. To see what is coming up next, please view Upcoming Events on the homepage here. We are now offering remote services to those of you who cannot make it into Chicagoland for our half-day seminars. Via your own phone and computer, you can "attend" the seminars and receive your CE credits. Contact us if you are interested.
Bridge Symposium
The Bridge Symposium is held annually during the month of April. Short lectures are provided throughout the day in between a provided breakfast and lunch.

Annual Awards Banquet
Every year, SEAOI holds a competition of Excellence in Structural Engineering that can be entered by any member firm. Categories are based on project cost and include Small, Medium and Large projects. The projects are presented in May to the membership in front of judges who will choose the winners. An awards banquet is held in June where the competition winners are announced. For more information, go to the Excellence in Structural Engineering Competition page here.

Annual Trade Show
The Annual Trade Show is held in January and everyone is welcome to and attend. Vendors and companies have booths set up for attendees to obtain information and short presentations are given by a handful of the vendors. The event is held in the morning from 8am to noon.
Refresher Course
The refresher course is given each year during the winter months to prepare candidates for the IL SE Exam. You may register for any number of the content areas provided or, at a reduced price, you can register for every course. If you are licensed, the refresher course can be counted towards your continuing education credit requirements.

Young Engineers Committee Events
SEAOI's Young Engineers Committee hosts numerous events throughout the year that are geared towards younger and non-licensed engineers such as happy hours and SE Exam socials. In addition, the committee holds social events that are open to members and their friends and families such as baseball games.

SPONSORED/PROMOTED EVENTS
Canstruction
Canstruction® combines the competitive spirit of a design/build competition with a unique way to help feed hungry people. Competing teams, lead by architects and engineers, showcase their talents by designing giant sculptures made entirely out of canned foods. At the close of the exhibitions all of the food used in the structures is donated to local food banks for distribution to pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, elderly and day care centers.
IIT-Rice Campus EWEEK Exhibit
This is a free event to introduce children of all ages to the field of engineering. The building will be full of hands-on activities and demonstrations to allow young people to experience and explore the engineering field. The theme of this years Expo is "Engineered in Illinois", with an emphasis on sustainability. SEAOI is a sponsor of this event and will have (4) display table. Additional information on the event may be found at; http://danada.rice.iit.edu/eweek. If you're interested in participating at the SEAOI display tables, please contact Carol Drucker at carol@dzse.com.
