MARCH DINNER MEETING

The Burj Khalifa

On January 4, 2010, the Burj Khalifa (formerly the Burj Dubai) officially opened, and in so doing officially claimed its title of not only the tallest building in the world, but also the tallest manmade structure.  At 828m and over 160 stories in height, Burj Khalifa is 320m taller than the previous record holder.  Designed by the Chicago office of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, it is a project almost 7 years in the making between all design and construction phases.  The project represents the collaboration of literally thousands of people from across the globe, all striving to build a structure which pushes the limits of our current technology in order to create something never before seen.  James Pawlikowski, one of the senior structural engineers for the project, will provide an overview of the features of the world’s tallest building, as well as the challenges faced in designing this unique and unprecedented structure.

James Pawlikowski is an Associate Director at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP.  He holds a masters degree in architecture and structural engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  James is a licensed structural engineer as well as a LEED Accredited Professional.  In his career at SOM, James has worked on many significant projects throughout the world, including numerous tall buildings.  He is currently a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), the Structural Engineers Association of Illinois (SEAOI), and the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS).  James is also a member of the ASCE Sustainability Committee, and is Secretary of the Structural Engineers Foundation.

SEAOI EVENTS
SEAOI is now an AIA/CES approved provider of continuing education for architects.
Dinner Meetings
Dinner meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month at the Cliff Dwellers Club in Chicago. The event includes a cocktail hour, dinner, and presentation. Presentations are typically member firms' projects related to structural engineering. Two months out of the year, our dinner meetings are replaced with the Structural Engineers Foundation Lecture. Dinner meetings are not held during the summer months of June, July, and August. See above for information on the next dinner meeting.
Seminars/Workshops
SEAOI hosts many seminars and workshops throughout the year to aid in meeting your continuing education requirements. These events typically vary from 4 to 8 hours and are held throughout the Chicagoland area. To see what is coming up next, please view Upcoming Events on the homepage here. We are now offering remote services to those of you who cannot make it into Chicagoland for our half-day seminars. Via your own phone and computer, you can "attend" the seminars and receive your CE credits. Contact us if you are interested.
Bridge Symposium
The Bridge Symposium is held annually during the month of April. Short lectures are provided throughout the day in between a provided breakfast and lunch.

SPONSORED/PROMOTED EVENTS
Canstruction
Canstruction® combines the competitive spirit of a design/build competition with a unique way to help feed hungry people. Competing teams, lead by architects and engineers, showcase their talents by designing giant sculptures made entirely out of canned foods. At the close of the exhibitions all of the food used in the structures is donated to local food banks for distribution to pantries, shelters, soup kitchens, elderly and day care centers.
IIT-Rice Campus EWEEK Exhibit
This is a free event to introduce children of all ages to the field of engineering. The building will be full of hands-on activities and demonstrations to allow young people to experience and explore the engineering field. The theme of this years Expo is "Engineered in Illinois", with an emphasis on sustainability. SEAOI is a sponsor of this event and will have (4) display table. Additional information on the event may be found at; http://danada.rice.iit.edu/eweek. If you're interested in participating at the SEAOI display tables, please contact Carol Drucker at carol@dzse.com.
